How the USPS Has Prepared for the 2026 Peak Holiday Season
The holiday shopping season typically results in a significant increase in shipment volumes, making it one of the busiest times of the year for postal and delivery services. To ensure that gifts, greeting cards, and care packages reach their destinations on time, carriers begin preparing for the seasonal rush months in advance. Before each holiday season, the United States Postal Service (USPS) unveils its preparations to assure customers that their mail and packages would be delivered on schedule.
These preparations typically involve increasing USPS’s processing and delivery capacity to accommodate the surge in shipping volumes. Some measures, such as hiring seasonal employees, are temporary, where as others are part of a larger expansion and modernization effort that extends beyond peak seasons.
Expanding daily package processing capacity. Increasing this capacity is one of USPS’s top priorities during the peak holiday season. In 2026, USPS installed 164 package sorting machines with automatic scanning capabilities. These machines can handle more and larger packages than older models and ensure better tracking visibility.
Hiring over 10,000 seasonal employees. The number of employees that USPS hires for the holiday season has gone down from 40,000 a few years ago and 14,000 last year due to a combination of lowered overtime rates, improved staffing, and other changes that has stabilized the USPS workforce. Nevertheless, USPS employs additional staff in key locations.
Launching a new tracking platform. Last year, USPS introduced a new package tracking and reporting platform. It works several times faster than its predecessor, often updating package statuses within minutes of scanning. It also provides customers with more accurate location information. While it does not speed up delivery, it does provide customers with peace of mind.
Opening new facilities. In fiscal year 2026, USPS opened 31 new sorting and delivery centers (S&DCs) and 10 new regional processing and distribution centers (RPDCs), which are associated with 35 local processing centers (LPCs).
Deploying new vehicles. Over the past three years, USPS has deployed more than 45,000 new postal delivery vehicles, and it plans to continue doing so throughout the upcoming holiday season.
Installing USPS Smart Lockers. Smart Lockers are a new solution for sending and receiving packages. Installed in post office lobbies, they allow customers to send and receive packages when home delivery is impractical or undesirable. Unlike older gopost units, Smart Lockers do not require registration and are available on demand during the post office lobby hours.
Although USPS is doing everything possible to deliver packages on time during the peak season, it is still recommended that you mail postcards and packages early, bearing in mind the holiday shipping deadlines. The deadlines for 2026 are:
