USPS and U.S. UPS Holiday Operating Schedules
Postal and courier companies normally close their offices and do not deliver on major holidays, but each of the companies has its own holiday schedule. Let’s take a closer look at the United States Postal Service (USPS) and U.S. UPS holiday operating schedules so that you can plan your time-sensitive deliveries accordingly.
USPS Holiday Schedule
Since the United States Postal Service is a federal agency, its offices are closed on federal holidays, of which there are eleven every year. Five of the holidays are fixed, and the rest are floating:
- New Year’s Day (January 1; observed on January 2 in 2023)
- Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. (the third Monday of January; January 16 in 2023)
- Washington’s Birthday / Presidents’ Day (the third Monday of February; February 20 in 2023)
- Memorial Day (the last Monday of May; May 29 in 2023)
- Juneteenth National Independence Day (June 19)
- Independence Day (July 4)
- Labor Day (the first Monday of September; September 4 in 2023)
- Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples’ Day (the second Monday of October; October 9 in 2023)
- Veterans Day (November 11)
- Thanksgiving Day (the fourth Thursday of November; November 23 in 2023)
- Christmas Day (December 25)
Please note that when a fixed federal holiday falls on a Saturday, USPS offices will normally be closed and there will be no delivery on the preceding Friday; when a holiday falls on a Sunday, USPS offices will be closed and there will be no delivery on the following Monday.
You should also keep in mind that the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas is a peak season for the USPS, so if you want your packages to arrive on time, you should check out the USPS shipping deadlines.
USPS gopost lockers are normally accessible 24/7, so you will most likely be able to pick your package up from a gopost locker if it has been delivered prior to a federal holiday, but parcels are not delivered to lockers on federal holidays. Similarly, if you ship a parcel via a gopost locker on a federal holiday, it will be out for delivery the next business day.
U.S. UPS Holiday Schedule
Being a private courier service, UPS does not have the same holiday schedule as the USPS; it typically operates partially or fully on some federal holidays.
In 2023, UPS is closed and does not deliver on the following federal holidays:
- New Year’s Day (January 1)
- Memorial Day (the last Monday of May; May 29)
- Independence Day (July 4)
- Labor Day (the first Monday of September; September 4)
- Thanksgiving Day (the fourth Thursday of November; November 23)
- Christmas Day (December 25)
The only UPS service available on these days is UPS Express Critical.
In addition, UPS pickup or delivery service is not available and only limited UPS Store locations are open on Easter Sunday (April 9 in 2023), Mother’s Day (the second Sunday of May; May 14 in 2023), Christmas Eve (December 24) and New Year’s Eve (December 31). Those locations that are open may have modified business hours, so it’s a good idea to check with your local UPS Store location for its specific operation hours in advance.
UPS operates fully (the UPS Store locations are open and UPS pickup and delivery service is available) on the following federal holidays:
- Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. (the third Monday of January; January 16 in 2023)
- Washington’s Birthday / Presidents’ Day (the third Monday of February; February 20 in 2023)
- Juneteenth National Independence Day (June 19)
- Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples’ Day (the second Monday of October; October 9 in 2023)
- Veterans Day (November 11)
Please note that while UPS operates on these federal holidays, UPS SurePost and UPS Mail Innovations deliveries, which UPS co-delivers with the United States Postal Service, will take an additional business day to arrive due to a USPS holiday.
